Notes: H. D, along with his brother Kenneth, went to Blackey in 1941, prepared to lie about their ages to the Army recruiter who was supposed to be there that day. The recruiter never showed up, so H D, after graduation, went to Louisville to work in a machine shop. Finally drafted in 1943, he did his basic training in Texas and was assigned to the 36th division (The T-Patch, or Texas National Guard). Shipped to France, he was the unit’s bazooka man until his loader was critically wounded. While escorting two French resistance fighters to their home village on February 19, 1945, he was wounded when one of them stepped on a pile of rubble which concealed a shoebox mine. He returned home, worked his way back to health, and married Edna Whitaker in October 1945. He attended mechanic school at Mayo and in Knoxville, TN. He worked nights for an auto dealer while he and Edna attended college. He became a vocational teacher, eventually retiring as the regional coordinator for the seven counties around Louisville. He wrote a book about growing up in Carcassonne and serving in WW II, and died in 2007, while attending a reunion of his military brigade in Texas. Father of Michael Caudill of Carcassonne, Ken Douglas Caudill (d. 1960), Dr. Robert Caudill, and Lonna Ann Caudill.
